Our Martha Guy Summer Institute (MGSI) Program Leader experience this past summer was tremendous. It consisted of a lot of fun, plenty of learning, and very little sleep. As Program Leaders, we had the opportunity to guide rising seniors through this life changing experience. We helped them to further develop their leadership skills, their business knowledge, and create a business plan; all while instilling the idea of professionalism, a concept that is often overlooked. MGSI provided the leaders and participants opportunities in Boone, as well as nationally in Washington D.C., and New York City. Participants and leaders alike, truly developed skills that will help translate into college and future career paths. As a leader team, we worked to creatively plan 2-weeks of Harry Potter themed activities to enhance the Appalachian experience. Whether through competitive games of ultimate frisbee or sunset hikes, it was a pleasure to spend time with these high achieving students. As Program Leaders, we worked closely with MGSI Participants, Walker College of Business faculty, and business professionals who mentored and offered advice to the entire program. We took on many challenges throughout the 3-weeks, however, it has enriched each of our lives and worked to strengthen our communication, problem solving, and leadership skills. Overall, this has been one of our favorite opportunities while at Appalachian and a memory we will cherish for a long time. To anyone interested in becoming a leader, we could not recommend the experience highly enough.
